Please Throw the Game, Oklahoma

This has been one of the most exciting weekends of football I can remember, starting Friday at noon and ending at about 11:30 Sunday night.

Unfortunately, this (Monday) morning I must visit the Miami-Dade Juvenile Detention Center to recruit do a mock interview for a law school class, so the morning updates will be non-existent. However, a couple things involving college football (and mainly Ohio State) have been bugging me, and it’s been amplified immensely since this weekend.

1. Don’t tell me the college football regular season is already like a playoff. Off the top of my head, we’ve seen the likes of Nebraska make it to the BCS Championship after getting blown out in their last regular season game to Colorado (while not even making it to the Big 12 Championship), Oklahoma make it to the big dance after losing their last game, and we’re possibly on the verge of seeing Ohio State make it to the big game while sitting at home, after losing their second to last game.

As it is, the BCS favors teams who play in shitty "Big" conferences (Big 12, Big 10, Big East), which also coincidentally don’t schedule very difficult out of conference games. Looking back, Missouri, West Virginia, and Ohio State have had cake schedules. Check out the schedulesof some of the two and three loss teams from the SEC, who not only have to get through their tough in conference opponents, but then they have to go out of conference and play solid teams that are out for blood and motivated like hell to beat them.

2. Don’t tell me Ohio State vs. Michigan is the Big 10 Championship game. Firstly, we’ll all assume that Michigan doesn’t blow ass chunks and that this could be a competitive game. With that assumption, other teams who do play conference championships actually play other quality opponents prior to said conference championship. Essentially, Ohio State’s regular season consists of all preseason games until their one big game against Michigan. Then, they make it to a bowl game and either:

a. get blown out, or

b. ensure they have a referee in the game on payroll to throw a yellow flag in a very necessary spot.

One example of a team that could benefit from a playoff system is Virginia Tech. This is a team that started out slow, who happened to play an LSU team that started strong, and got killed. Then, a few weeks ago lost another game that they dominated for 58 minutes that included onside kicks and prayers by Boston College. Had V-Tech played an Ohio State-like schedule, they would scratch LSU off the list, and be looking at one unlucky loss, and probably be sitting at number 1 in the current BCS standings. If V-Tech plays Ohio State tomorrow, the Hokies win by at least a touchdown 7 out of 10 times.

Look at this schedule. Ohio State played two opponents that are currently ranked in the Top 25, and none are higher than 15. How can Ohio State be deserving at a another chance at the championship game but a team like Hawaii isn’t? Look, I’m in no way politicing that Hawaii should be playing in Louisiana come January, but wouldn’t it be fun to see them give it a shot in a playoff, and possibly stick it to the Buckeyes?

People, don’t be fooled by the fact that we are going to have an entertaining championship weekend and National Championship game. This system still sucks and needs to be changed. The best chance we have at a change is Missouri losing this weekend and WVU blowing OSU out 66-10 in the National Championship. As great as it’d be, I just don’t have it in me to root for to get a shot at the game.

Oklahoma, do what’s right, throw the game.
